Why We Don't Do Subscriptions

Every week another app switches to subscriptions. A weather app wants $5/month. A calculator needs an annual plan. A flashlight app — yes, a flashlight app — has a “Pro” tier. Something broke in the software industry and we’re not going to fix it by joining in.

At CasaVargas, every app is either a one-time purchase or free. No subscriptions, no recurring charges, no “premium” tiers that gate features you already paid for. Here’s why.

The Problem With Subscriptions

Subscriptions made sense for services that have ongoing costs — streaming music, cloud storage, server-side computation. Your Spotify subscription pays for bandwidth, licensing deals, and infrastructure that costs money every month you use it.

But most apps aren’t services. A document scanner runs on your phone’s hardware. A download manager uses your internet connection. A karaoke app processes audio on your computer. The ongoing costs to the developer are close to zero per user. So what exactly is the monthly fee paying for?

Usually, it’s paying for the developer’s lifestyle. Which is fine — developers deserve to make money. But there are better models than holding your tools hostage month after month.

The One-Time Purchase Model

When you buy OneScribe, Beltr, or any CasaVargas app, you own it. Updates are included. New features are included. There’s no moment where you stop paying and lose access to your own workflows.

This creates the right incentive structure. We make money by building something good enough that new people want to buy it — not by trapping existing users into perpetual payments.

How This Works Financially

The honest answer: it’s harder. Subscription revenue is predictable and compounds. One-time purchases require you to keep finding new customers or keep building new products that existing customers want to buy.

But CasaVargas is a solo indie studio, not a VC-funded startup chasing recurring revenue metrics. The overhead is low. There’s no board demanding MRR growth. If an app sells well enough to justify the time spent building it, that’s a win.

We also use GitHub Sponsors for open-source projects like DebridDownloader. If people find the software valuable and want to support continued development, they can — voluntarily, not because a paywall forces them to.

The User Relationship

Subscriptions create an adversarial relationship between developer and user. The developer is incentivized to add just enough to keep you subscribing, but not so much that you’d be satisfied with a single purchase. Features get artificially gated. Free tiers get deliberately crippled.

One-time purchases align incentives. We want you to love the app enough to tell your friends about it. We want reviews that say “this is worth every penny” because that’s how new customers find us. The only way to grow is to build something genuinely good.

Our Promise

Every app we ship at CasaVargas will respect this principle. Buy it once, own it forever. If we can’t make a product work financially as a one-time purchase, we’ll make it free and open-source instead. You’ll never open one of our apps and see a “your trial has expired” modal.

Software should be owned, not rented.
